Should I buy TF2 right nao?

I just looked on steam for some games to play, and I noticed TF2 is only $8.99. Is it still being played much (online), and is it still worth the monies? Also, is there a way to turn off the gore? Not really nessecary, but my father has Hematophobia, soo..yeah.

Well theres an ingame Party mode which replaces gibs with confetti, ducks, other things

but that can only be enabled by sevrer owners and stuff.
