Author Topic: Is gameboy emulation okay?  (Read 2151 times)

It's only legal if you rip the game yourself. I think. It may be illegal no matter what.

I don't care if it's "okay" to use emulators, I just use them anyway.  Mainly it's for games that I don't have, but if I like them enough, I buy them.  Conker's Bad Fur Day is one example.  I'm not suggesting that you do it.  If you feel bad about it, then don't.  I'm just saying that I don't personally have a problem with it.

I assume you don't care if you get banned either?

LOL!  I do care.  I think I'd only get banned if I actually posted links to emulators and roms, though.  I should be okay as long as I don't tell people to pirate games and download roms/emulators.  I'm just saying I don't have a problem with it.

Rules clearly state that discussing emulators is fine
Example time!

You illegally steal a loaf of bread from a store. Eat half of it, and later decide to purchase it.
You think you'll just walk out of there without a problem?
You forgeted up on your example
In this case, the emulator would be equal to a food sample at a store
They give you the food sample, so you can tell whether or not you want to buy that type of food
Tyler66 is doing the same thing.

yes, however bolded below is not ok:

I suppose if the games he's playing are abandonware it's fine - however the sentence "but if I like them enough, I buy them." leads me to believe they are still being sold .. so if he is playing them without buying them, it's piracy.

See my last post for my explanation.

You're an idiot. Playing a game on an emulator without paying for it is piracy unless said game is abandonware. Stop talking unless you know anything about what is being discussed (which you clearly do not).

Game DEMOS are how you see if you like them enough to buy them, not pirating them.

But see love, there's the part you're being ignorant about. Of course, I may be wrong with this, but from what I'm led to believe, they're just testing the game using an emulator. They're using it as a demo, and if they like it, they buy the game.

No need to get so defensive, pull your thong outta your ass and try having a casual debate.

They are playing the full version of the game for free. Piracy.

A demo is a limited portion of the game, whether it be content-wise or time-limited.

Playing the full version of a retail game without paying = piracy.

You are an idiot. Stop trying to seem smart and learn your facts first. I believe it is you who needs to "pull your thong outta your ass".

I may be wrong with this
You are. All unauthorized distribution is copyright infringement, so unless Nintendo is running the site themselves (which they're not), it's not legal. It might also be DRM circumvention, which might break the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (with the exemptions in the act itself which I am not familiar with, and the exemptions the Library of Congress made within the last year or so).

Also Lugnut, allow me to direct you to this post which will address all of your questions. Short answer is post all you want on this forum about emulation, just don't talk about where you got your roms or make some kind of vague "arrrrrgh, i'm a pirate" comment.

Can you please cool it on the "You are an idiot" bullstuff? Seriously, you seem pretty cool til you suddenly get all defensive. You've almost lost my respect for you.

Please understand that there isn't exactly many facts that you can gain on this subject. What I'm saying is that yes, it's piracy. I never denied that. But I'm trying to help you understand my point of view, which is that they're probably just testing the game before they buy it. I do the same exact thing. I play it for 5min, then decide if I wanna play it or not.

Not all games have demos. But with games being so expensive nowadays, most people want to be sure that they want the game.

To be fair, as long as they buy it afterwards, it shouldn't be piracy. They would have a copy of the game, and no longer have a need to use the emulated version.

Alright. And with that, I now see I'm wrong.

That so hard, Sulfate?

I don't get this in the least. When did "samples" come into play?
I certainly mentioned full loaves of bread being stolen. Not demonstrations.

You seem to want me to apologize for having a personality. Sorry I'm not nice?

You've almost lost my respect for you.

I don't know what to say to this - you're implying your "respect for me" matters in any way. I'm not interested in what you think of me. You can feel however you want to about that!

Please understand that there isn't exactly many facts that you can gain on this subject. no you're right, there isn't a wikipedia article on internet piracy, and lawsuits are fictional! What I'm saying is that yes, it's piracy. I never denied that. But I'm trying to help you understand my point of view, which is that they're probably just testing the game before they buy it. I do the same exact thing. I play it for 5min, then decide if I wanna play it or not. ...which is piracy

Not all games have demos. But with games being so expensive nowadays, most people want to be sure that they want the game. get a job? read reviews? watch youtube videos?

To be fair, as long as they buy it afterwards, it shouldn't be piracy. Playing the result of someone else's hard work (that was meant to be bought) for free is fair? Shame on you. They would have a copy of the game, and no longer have a need to use the emulated version.

bold explains my thoughts above

That so hard, Sulfate?

I'm sorry you couldn't accept the right answer the first time.

You seem to want me to apologize for having a personality. Sorry I'm not nice?
This argument is over. I was wrong, I understand this, and you continue being a douche.
From the start of this, I've been acting like it's not a big deal. Because really, it's not. It's just a debate. But you seem to have too short of a temper to keep your cool, regardless of how small the argument is.
