Author Topic: Uploading videos over 1gb takes a long time.  (Read 3014 times)

The movie is 30 minutes long, it's 3.68 gb, and I started uploading it last night and it still has 4 hours till it finishes uploading. I recorded it with fraps. And I tried to compress it into a zip file but it only made it 3 gb. Any of that help?

You don't compress it into a .zip file.

You put all the clips together in something like Windows Movie Maker or Sony Vegas Pro, and render it into a .wmv file, which will probably be a LOT smaller.

You never upload raw FRAPS footage into YouTube unless its like a small ten minute clip.

You change the codec and compression, not the format. You can compress a 4GB .AVI file into something like 200MB and still have it look good if you do it right.

OP, you might want to try importing it into Vegas and then exporting it as an .mp4, since the preset for that already has a decent compression rate.

It depends on a few things that could be causing it to be so slow. Here are some things that can affect the upload time to youtube.

  • The size of the video in your case is over 3GB
  • Your upload speed
  • And Youtube's Download speed (They could be having a lot of traffic)

What I think is the cause is probably both your upload speed and the size of the video you're uploading making it even longer to upload.

Go to http://www.speedtest.net and tell us what your upload speed is, and we can figure the problem out that way.

I uploaded a 1 GB file to YouTube and it only took me like 10 minutes

I just do .wmv for 720p videos, and they're never higher than 100mb.

It will be over 100mb if it's over 30 minutes long.

Better than 200mb .avi :/

You use a good codec (DivX or Xvid) and COMPRESS the .avi so it's smaller. .wmv has a preset compression rate, that's why they're smaller. Using a codec just gives you more control, which is why I recommend doing it.

I don't have Sony Vegas and don't plan on spending a $100 to get it. I'm also running on windows 7 if this helps.
