I'm terrible at fighting pyros. 
They keep cornering me and using the airblast.
Or they gain on me, and casually flame me to death before I can shoot whatever I have at them.

As for soldiers, I know what you mean.
I play him quite frequently, and he is pretty reliant about the splash damage.
It's pretty hard to get direct hits.
I recommend strategy, try countering the rockets by hiding in a corner, going to look for health packs, etc.
And to kill him, just throw whatever you have at him while performing the above.
