I took a very small amount of damage (which was quickly repaired by the dispenser) and then hammered the guy with a wrench

Pro Spy tip: If you're disguised as an enemy, you can leech health and ammo from dispensers, even if you are cloaked. Which in turn means that if you are near a level two or three dispenser, you can stay cloaked forever.
