eve servers cost a lot to run. they wouldn't just make it free. then they would have no income to run the servers, and there would be an influx of people who wanted to try it out or play but didn't have the money. the company would be bankrupt in days, they would be forced to lay off like everyone, along with the servers crashing once word got out.

The Free to Play model, when handled effectively, actually tends to increase revenue for companies.

Lord of the Rings online, for example, doubled their profits after switching over to a F2P model.
