I actually ended up doing that, barricaded her door, and left the house forever...Went 2 houses down and got eaten alive by 3 zombies.
The weapon system with melee weapons sucks. I swear to god I was swinging that hammer at the zombie 25 times and died.
What am I doing wrong?!

Any tips on what to do next? Where can I find a projectile-based weapon close to my house?
EDIT: I'm held up at the food store right next to the origional safe house. I'm fed and well slept, but I need a better weapon.
Can someone please tell me where to get one?
