No, Japan has just emerged from a feudal system by the time WWII came along, they were actually somewhat primitive compared to the at-time superpower national socialist Germany.

You're not making any sense. I'm asking him what exactly he's fighting for, not why. Why comes out of what it is, which is what I'm trying to get out of him.

Unfortunately he might ignore my question because he thinks "It's my homeland" works as an answer. It is not anyones homeland except for the people who've been there for thousands of years. To continue, I will say that even if it is someones homeland they would still have reasons to fight for it even when it's crappy. It's as if someone would say "Why do you care about this woman?" and then the other person answers "it's my mom" except that it's not that simple to relate to and therefore needs further explanation.
