Lesser things are capable of raking in as much, or more money compared to greater things. Take Call of Duty's revenue versus Battlefield's revenue as an example.
Call of Duty used to define the war game, the games based on real wars. I remember featurettes where old people would talk about the war and how the game captures it. Now, they completely make up wars. They've lost their routes. Sure, it gets old to redo old wars, but they lost the base of their games - real world experiences. They can capture parts of it for the whole, but all together it's just crap.
