i used to hate gimp a lot at first and prefer paint.net, but i guess i just got bored with it and it didn't really have as many capabilities as gimp.

adding to this post: one of the main reasons i love gimp is it's color to transparency filter. when used right, makes transing images the easiest thing ever, with good quality too

Updates come out often. You've got to check the website for them.
Gimp loads instantly in linux, I think it's just the Windows port.
