Should it be possible to switch between player and tree?

no you can't :)
you have to export the model with animations.
i am already doing that too.

i'm pretty sure all you'd have to do would be mfloatvalue the player's x y and z positions to make it snap to the brick grid, then change his playertype to tree playertype, and that'd be pretty easy.
