SkyEye would probably be worse off as a coveted private mod, than a publicly available one.

You need to make it server-sided. It would be for the best this way actually.

nexus has more or less dedicated himself to making server hosting a pain in the ass so guys don't count on any actual way to counteract these.

Ok seriously, stop posting that same suggestion, because a server sided version would be a completely different add-on.

Honestly, as a server host, this thread is just frustrating.

Stuff like this SkyEye bullstuff is just plain annoying. Anybody with this will have an incredible advantage over anyone who doesn't, ultimately forcing everyone to get it - and ruining the game for everyone.

If you made it privately for some server of yours - fine. But releasing an add-on whose sole purpose is to reveal the location of other players? Surely you must realize how damaging that is. I can't host deathmatches without others knowing my location, I can't have hide-and-go-seek games, hell - 90% of the minigames we know and love will be utterly destroyed by this.

It's disappointing to see such an accomplished scripter waste his skill and effort on a project like this. I really hope Badspot finds a way to permanently put these sorts of mods out of commission.

I understand your points, and I agree for the most part.  I have not really seen "hide and go seek" games ever in blockland, but this surely kills it before it can begin.  You make a serious leap to the conclusion that being "forced" to download an add-on ruins the game for everyone.  I do disagree that any major percentage of minigames are "utterly destroyed" or even partially affected by this.  However, for the minigames that support campers + hiding snipers that are revealed by SkyEye:  Since aimbots started being leaked around, I thought this SkyEye would be an excellent balancer, especially if made open to the public.  It doesn't aim for you, and I have found that it is utterly useless in any medium to close range shootout, often even a distraction.  It just finds players.

This reminds me of a short story I once read about a government that tried to enforce exact equality on its people.  Instead of bringing everyone up to be equal on the highest level, it hinders people and shoves everyone down to be equal on the lowest.  To make a short story shorter: it sucked for everyone.

If you want to enforce perfect equality amongst server goers, would you rather they all had equal advantages, or all had equal disadvantages?

I think the core philosophy behind the mods I made is that everyone should share all possible advantages.

the terragen thing does not work, cant find it in addons when i start? help?

How about a server sided add on that blocks SkyEye?

Nexus -

My main point is not necessarily that we need to make everyone equal. I was trying to say that this wasn't really an opt out/opt in mod - if you are in a deathmatch server and someone is using this, you are immediately at a disadvantage (and this is simply not debatable) if you are not using this, and thus people are forced to get this in order to compete - even if they don't necessarily want it!

As far as your argument for equalizing aimbots - well that's just silly. First off, aimbots in blockland are horrible. I've used one myself, and trust me - you're much better off just doing the aiming yourself. Secondly, talk about fighting fire with fire! Just because someone designed an add-on that abuses clientside information doesn't mean we should all jump on the wagon and make more!

As an example, I used to run a custom gamemode called Murder Mystery. It was very popular, and I would usually be forced to limit the server to about 20 players in order to avoid chaos. Long story short, the gamemode relied very heavily on being sneaky and attacking by surprise. Anyone who always knew where someone else was - well, it would just be ridiculously unfair. Or take that gamemode that one of the clans recently made (colleagues? craftsmen?). It consisted of an entire team whose goal was to remain semi-invisible and avoid detection. This mod completely and utterly destroys that game.

Hell, one doesn't need to limit themselves to blockland to see how ridiculous a mod like this would be. Take a look at ANY popular FPS these days. Not a single one reveals the position of all players - why do you think that is?

My point is, your primary argument for the creation of this seems to be "it can counter aimbots". Is this really worth the cost to the game?

You know that story about the government you talked about? The way I see it, you're the government, imposing this "great equalizer" on us - and in the end, as you put it best: "it sucks for everyone".

cucumber im sure this crap will be patched in v20, even if we have to wait 5 months

This entire thread should just be failbinned.

It's funny because I had the same thought relating to player radars :cookieMonster:

Second of all, it will be failed and patched once it's released.

You should have noticed that you can't get positions directly.
It means don't try to go around it.

"It can counter aimbots" was not a major point at all.  You really should not have concentrated on it.

You totally misinterpreted the part where I talked about the fictional government, although it seems you did that on purpose.  If you want clarification, servers are like mini-governments dictating what people can do.

80% of your argument is invalid.

As to the rest:

I understand your concern that people would feel the need to download this to remain competitive in blockland DMs.  You seem to imply that most of blockland is DMing, but that isn't your main point.  Just in general, torque is not the best for anything involving stealth.  I do realize that this takes away some of the options for interesting games that servers host.

If you are trying to get me to have some sort of "Oh, I get it now" moment, you should give up now.

It might be possible, but I have not been having luck with the method I was testing to block SkyEye, which was to make fake players all over the place to jumble up the radar.

equal advantages lol. if you call this an advantage which should make everyone equal than so is the mini nuke.

Don't do it, it will be automatically failed.

Someone should PM Badspot about this thread... I would, but I doubt he would read my messages.

You, among others have called this an unfair advantage.  If you want to claim that an unfair advantage does not fall under the category "advantage" then I guess that's your choice.
