Episode One - Shave the Universe

No it's not a typo, it's a play on words that will make sense later.

What The Hell is This?

Perhaps you remember Menen's Search for the Magical Milkshake. Anyone who was a follower of that knows about this forum based adventure game. I want to continue that adventure with this point-and-click spiritual sequel. Fully backed by NicktheSushi and Menen, this game aims to bring the old school point-and-click genre to Menen's adventure with Menen and Marc.

The Story

Episode One: Shave the Universe is set some years after the events of MSMM. Marc has since become roommates with Menen, and together they've found an affordable apartment in Downtown Somewheresburg. Marc's been out all that day so it's up to Menen to do some shopping. However, after trouble ensues, he grabs his trusty cactus friend and gets into Marc's beat up station wagon to journey on another adventure, this time with your direct input!

With graphics specifically designed by Nick, the game looks and feels like the forum game, with just a slightly more linear approach. If you're a fan of Lucas Art's or Telltale's adventure games, then you'll at least enjoy MaM:Ep1, if not love it.

What's the Read Me File Say?

Not that you'd ask, but I know a lot of people ignore the fact that there's a read me file even in the zip. SO here it is for reference:

Code: [Select]
Make sure to extract every file in this zip, placing them all in the same destination folder, else the game will not run

correctly.

There is no walkthrough of this game (as of yet), if you get abolutly stuck, feel free to PM me on the forums, or contact me via

AIM or MSN or Skype (all Swholli), or email me at Swholli@gmail.com (which is my MSN email, too). I'll give you some hints.

Enjoy the demo, there is more to come. This is episode one of a five or six part series.

Also, excuse any and all typos. Most of the coding for this game was done at about 4 in the morning over the summer. I dunno why

each day I waited until then to code, but I did. Those will be spellchecked and such before the final relases.

So far the demo is the complete first act of the game with three interlocking puzzles to be solved. More will be added to make this a complete experience, and then expect episode 2.

Minor note: there's a glitch at the beginning of the game where you can't use the "walk" function to press the start button (even though it's your default selection when the game starts). Simply use the mouse wheel or right click to change to any other function and press start. You can select mouse functions that way any other time in the game, also. Also, middle mouse clicking will move Menen without needed to switch to the walk function. This can be handy when you're walking toward a door and need to use the "use function" to open it, but don't want to scroll around to find it.

Other than that, hoorah. Have fun with the demo, I expect the full version to be out some time in late September.

I am Menen i thought you werent working on this because you stopped giving me updates

Woooo

Time to play :D

I was about to tell you about this on Steam but you weren't on.

When I left the alleyway with the strange man, I got sent to the far left of just outside the apartments. :c

Edit1:
When talking to the mailman.

"Why only a quater?"

"Why only a quater?"

That's an intentional glitch. Sort of. I can probably fix it. I honestly don't know why it did that. I was hoping people would be like: "oh I get it, the bad part of town is the alleyway" or something.

Wait, what about the quarter part? Oh, spelling. I meant to have that fixed, and honestly I thought I had.

I hope this'll be better then when nick ended the series and dieded

Then he got lazy and started a new one saying he wouldnt get lazy and got lazy.

So what did you use to make this? Seems solid enough.

Betcha there won't be an Episode Three :cookieMonster:

So what did you use to make this? Seems solid enough.

It's a freeware program called "Adventure Game Studios." A lot of the stuff is premade functions, but it still relays heavily on it's own scripting, which is C based. It's hard to understand if you're not a coder, but everybody could learn it in a few days, possibly hours if they're already a coder.

And don't go saying it's anything like Game Maker, cause it's not. It's more concrete than that. In fact, even Ben "Yatzee" (the Zero Punctuation guy, if you don't know) uses this to make games sometimes. However, you might say it's less versatile than Game Maker cause it only makes adventure games. To that I say to you, it's actually more than it seems. Believe it or not, it can make other kinds of games too. It's just harder to master.

Basically it's the most responsive and easy to use freeware game engine anyone could ask for, and though you have to have a soft sport for adventure games to just pick up and use it, you can also dig deep to produce other genres and play styles while still using the wonderfully easy scripting language within. It's defiantly worth checking out though. Me, I love adventure games, have since I was a kid. This was a perfect engine, and I learned about it and how to use it years ago. I just never had the right project to make me want to make something. When I saw MSMM, I instantly thought: "this mythos just screams adventure game" and got right to it. Nick liked the idea and agreed to help, and Menen was happy and gave story input.

Powerful yet simple Java/C#-style scripting language for scripting your game.

That's convenient. I program with C#. I would prefer to make my own 'engine' though.

Good job to you for not using something too constricting.

Betcha there won't be an Episode Three :cookieMonster:
No, see, It'll be like star wars. We'll release 4 and 6 next, and then ten years later we'll make 2, 3, and 5.

I might want to use Adventure Game Studios for any future development for any games :o

Anyways, I'm going to be playing it and tell you how I like it :D
