Because L4D and L4D2 are just generic first person shooters that are not set in an open world environment.

Dead Island is not your generic first person shooter and it's set in an open world environment.

Dead Island = Left 4 Dead 2 + Dead Rising 2

I'm pretty sure corpses fade away after a period of time so they would all be long gone before the events of the game.
