This will only happen if you're not the guy who does the main story first then does all the side quests.

Or if you don't want to miss sidequests because you skim through an area it starts in and then go past it again thinking "I was already here, so there probably isn't anything new to check out." AKA You go through an area without checking for what's there, then come back and don't think there's anything there since you don't remember what you did and didn't do while there. I check EVERYTHING when I go there, which means starting lots of sidequests.

I typically get to the Diplomatic Immunity quest first, then go out and do my thing(become Arch-Mage and Harbinger and Stormcloak war hero and Thane in three cities, for instance). I then approach Lydia in The Sleeping Giant Inn, having been gone for weeks to months, and she tells me she's figured out how to infiltrate the Thalmor embassy.
I tell her every time, "That didn't take long."
