I've tried getting to the Greybeards by 2 different paths, both leading me to trolls :(

Maybe Im just too low of a level right now to attempt. By the way, Im an Elf and Im wondering what should I focus on leveling up (sneak, speach) when I level up. Right now Im going a lot of sneak and speak and 1 hand

I remember when the game came out everyone was complaining about the trolls, but I never saw any on my way up. I went from whiterun though. I didn't realize there was a path up on the other side of the mountain. Took me forever to climb up the like 90 degree cliff face. I didn't even have a horse.
