He was the sole survivor of the battle for Installation 04 and was able to get a handful of troops off the surface of the ring, defend a small crew of soldiers (including Master Cheif) on their way back to Earth, and help humanity against the Covenant in the final days of the war.

As confirmed by Bungie, that was a easter-egg and was not considered canon towards the series.

That was also not canon. Bungie made a mistake when making him "killable". They remedied this by bringing him back in Halo 2 and giving him invincibility.
