Author Topic: Birthday coming up, wanting to upgrade my graphics card.  (Read 4938 times)

Just upgrade your GPU and PSU.

Then later on upgrade your CPU.
Is PSU power supply?

Okay, so the Radeon 6850 and the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171031
and I'll be set? Then, later on, I just upgrade the CPU?

Sounds bout right.

So, if I did that it would bottleneck?
Can you post the PSU you were talking about?
Yes.
The one in your post, ffs lol, here:

Like I said, the HD67XX series is probably the best you're gonna get without too much bottlenecking with that CPU.

Also, if you really want to go with the 6850, and provided that your CPU slot is an AM3 (I believe it is), then upgrade to a Phenom II.
Or wait until after October 12th, and upgrade your motherboard and get a new Zambezi CPU at the same time. 8 cores, 4.2GHz for the top of the range, about ~$300 one.

lol, which one is the HD67XX series?
that one or the other white thing?

Holy stuff, you really don't know what the forget you are doing lol.
The ones I posted are both HD6790s. The highest you are going to get without a big dose of bottlenecking.
The one Cyanian posted is $40 or so more and is the HD6850, but will give you lots of bottlenecking until you get a new CPU. Either way BF3 isn't gonna be very fun until you get a new CPU.
Like I said in my edit above, get this later:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808
or do what else I said in my edit above.

I'm confused, that's all, lol.
How much FPS would I get for what you suggested?

Same.
Alright.
Let's break this down.
You have a stuff CPU.
The graphics card information has to redirect through the CPU, before it gets to the graphics card. This means that what performance you get with really good graphics cards is entirely down to how much your CPU can process and 'let through' to the graphics card. Since both the HD6790 I suggested and the HD6850 Cyanian suggested are really good cards, they will both give you the same performance with this current CPU.
If you were to buy the HD6790 and then later on get a better CPU, let's say a Phenom II, then you will get more FPS in BF3 than with the old CPU, but not that many more.
If you were to buy the HD6850 and then later on get the Phenom II, then you will also get more FPS in BF3 than with the old CPU, but this time it will be considerably more, as it's a better card.
So the entirety of how well your GPU does relies on your CPU, which isn't very good.

But both cards will give you playable FPS on reasonably high detail right now.

So, just to clear this up, if I use the CPU I have now with one of those cards, (and the power supply) what will my average FPS be?

I'd say about 20 to 30 fps average on high detail.
Playable 30 to 40 maybe on medium.
I can't test it though.

Depends on your settings but should be decent, as in 40 and 50 or so at medium.

That's what I was going for, thanks!

Thanks, guys. You've helped a lot.
Now, just to buy it. Hopefully it will be at Fries >.<

What one, before I leave?
Just curious.
