Author Topic: [Update] Should I Get The HP Envy 17 - Not Getting It  (Read 1500 times)

Which one of those would you say is the most powerful? The prices are very nice, especially the lenovo IdeaPad, but I'm not sure how to tell low-specs from high-specs.
The last one, the G53.
If you want a bigger screen version of that (15.6" to 17.3"):

Lenovo is rubbish. Asus are pretty good but they seldom release a computer that isn't hard on the eyes.

The laptop in the OP has decent specs. But I think what people seem to forget is, its not just about hardware. Its about the look, the feel, your attitude towards the brand, the size, the general quality and finish. Sometimes paying more for all of these factors makes the customer happier. Be sure to only spend money on a computer that you need as well, 6GB ram is really not that necessary for most people.
Lenovo = IBM. They are good and cheap laptops. I was simply showing how cheap you could get the same specs for.

Also, nice reference to apple's ridiculous pricing in there, saying it's not just about the specs.

Quite common.

Why the hell would I want to pay money for the brand?  I want a laptop not an image.

I think I'm going to go with the ASUS G74, it's the same price as the HP Envy 17, but better specs?
Anyone have an example of what games and settings it can run?

lol maximum I ever got was 1368x768, maybe it's because i don't go for gaming but performance laptops. my current layout is:

laptops = working
desktops = gaming.

That one ethan linked?

Pretty much all Source games on the highest.  Minecraft will run flawlessly.  Very high end games, Crysis/Crysis 2/GTA4/etc. may struggle a bit but will do fine in medium.

BF3 highish detail, very playable, I'd say.
Would play Crysis relatively high as well. L4D and L4D2 easily max.

Ethan, thanks for the suggestions.
Nick, thanks for specifiying how well it can run games.

And thank you everyone else. I'm going to leave this topic open for a bit so you guys can continue to discuss whatever you need to.

Lenovo is rubbish.

When they sold here they did poorly and the only person I know who had one lost it after it smoked and shorted after several months.

Don't be such a jerk, it has nothing to do with that. I'm addressing the handicapped logic of how everyone on Blockland seems to be more interested in having a black box on their desk with un-necessarily high specifications, forgetting that the main aspect of owning a laptop is form factor. An ugly Asus or a grossly overrsized Toshiba gaming computer, with a slightly lesser price tag, compromises other aspects that are important to computing.

Just don't forget that when looking around.

I know little about good computer specs, but if you are looking to buy a computer, I would wait until black Friday/cyber Monday.

Is there a chance that the G74's price will be lowered on Cyber Monday?

That's the G73, this is the G74.
Yeah pretty much the same.  I have a GTX460, but "M" aka mobile models are a little bit weaker than the desktop models.  Regardless it's powerful for a laptop especially.  Make sure you switch to Intel integrated graphics if you're on battery and want to save power.

Oh definitely this.  Smart Mary.

At least by a little bit, maybe 5-10%.  Never know.

Alright, it doesn't really matter. Would just be a bit more convenient if it did. Thanks.
