Definitely upgrade the RAM, its cheap to do so and it pays off.

could you recommend a specific manufacturer or model?

Phenom x4: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125451
HD 7850: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125451
i recommend these as a significant upgrade

Thanks, though you linked the graphics card for the processor, i'm assuming it's this one?

and roughly how much better is that 7850 than my 6770? From what I can see, it has a difference of 224 more stream processors, it's 256 bit instead of 128, and it's 3.0 x16 instead of 2.1 x16. I'm hoping to be able to run ArmA 3 when it comes out on at least medium high to high.

your build is at $1138
$42 doesn't get a good psu, especially for a card like that
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-power-supply-rs700pcaae3us
this could work, but it's not 80 plus
actually i got $50 off the cpu ($169) already. so $92.
shoulda mentioned that

yeah it's the phenom x4-965
and the 7850 is x2 more powerful than the 6770, maybe more, and is also more power-efficient than say a 6850 or a 6870. It's actually better than a 6950. It should run arma 3 on atleast medium, probably high, assuming it's optimized correctly.

its supposed to be cheap, but will it work? as in will it cause massive explosions in my face?

No. It would work. It would suck though.

How do you get a 2.7 ghz celeron? I don't think that'll last very long at all.

could you recommend a specific manufacturer or model?

It depends on your motherboard and CPU, you need to check what type /  speed the motherboard requires. Avoid anything with a CAS higher than 9, or a speed lower than 1333mhz. Corsair or Transcend should be good, G.Skill if you have the money to put in. Kingston is quality for budget builds. Avoid generic brandless RAM.

Considering my 6870 runs arma 2 high at 60fps and max around 40-50 fps, your 7850 should run arma 3 fine.
Also damnit the 7850 is selling for when I got my 6870 a year ago for $150

Buy another card and crossfire

Buy another card and crossfire

eh it is only $120, but I need to upgrade my psu

No, but having high memory performance will contribute to the speed of programs, which is why I recommend it.
Not worth itif he can't afford it, the difference is so small you can't notice it.

I have a feeling the Phenom will bottleneck the 6870 like crazy; it's a very old CPU by now.
I was thinking this actually, wasn't gonna buy this stuff just yet gonna wait for newegg to throw christmas deals up like they usually do..
does anyone know if it will bottleneck

does anyone know if it will bottleneck
Depends how many cores. I have a Phenom II x4 and it is perfect for my Radeon 6870.

idk but if you get gaming ram everything will be fixed

the motherboard comes with nice 8gb gskill ram for free, limited time though :(

that's what this cpu is. I may get it anyway since it's a slight step up, you know, for something a little different
also, how much fps do you get in games with that 6870? what brand is it?

I'm starting to think between these two brands:
