because it makes them more money. and making money is the sole purpose of arcade games.

how does it make more money

how does it make more money

Cause if there's no timer, you can play forever, and if you can play forever, then you just put one quarter in and play for 10 days straight. And their profit at the end of the 10 days is one quarter.

Someone could walk up and wait for them to get off like "Get the forget off already"

Common sense

Or they could put on a timer and automate the process.

EDIT: You get how when you play an arcade game, you pick a character but there is a 30 second timer making it limited?
this is so some starfish doesnt just go to the character select screen and stay there forever

...
It's really not a difficult concept. Timed games in arcades never really bothered me until I was ten and by then I knew why they were that way.

It is so that some kid does not just idle forever on the character select screen. Honestly, it shouldn't even bother you, it takes like 15 seconds, tops to pick a character.

Child A inserts a quarter and lets Child B play, as apposed to Child A putting in a quarter and playing and then Child B putting in a quarter and playing. 25 < 50

It's kinda like asking "Why are there health in video games?"

The answer is there are timers because, if you leave it on the character selection screen someone can get a free game if you are away. And if no one takes it, then the CPU / Fight timer thing will end it, thus keeping a flow circulating. Also, I'd like to challenge that idea, why the hell would you stay on a character selection screen longer than about 5 minutes, I'd rather be choking a smurf or something during that time.

Think of it like this, ok.

A kid goes up and puts in $0.25

The kid is there, timer runs out, player automatically selected, he sits there and the player dies from being beat by COMP

If the kid gets up, another person proceeds and puts in $0.25

Second is repeated.

That leads to $0.50

A kid inserts $0.25

He sits there, doesn't choose a player, and it just sits

Someone comes up, and waits for them.

The person gets mad and tells them to hurry up.

The kids does so and plays the game, he is done.

The someone puts in $0.25 and plays

That leads $0.50

Also
Someone could sit their idle without playing, someone comes up who wants to play makes them get up.

oh yead didn't think like that

i was expecting some poor kid who doesn't spare a quarter to see that it's idle and play
