If you keep the lakes in darkness, however, that will prevent microbial life from growing too fast.

Nonetheless, I thought malaria was transmitted via mosquitoes. I think it's the mosquitoes that lay eggs in standing water that makes such places a haven for diseases, however, underground, where it is cool, mosquito threat is nill.

Vast stores of arms are being transported underground. Training of armies continues, and every man over the age of 19 is drafted to fight as a soldier, all others go through manditory training in the weilding of basic weaponry, women and children included (I hope that this doesn't lead to an influx of violent crime later, but whatever, my undoing at a later date I should hope), only exceptions are those under 13, and the infirm.

Great barriers are being raised by those brave enough to endure the volcanic perils. Everything from great trenches and moats, to great mounds of earth stretching for miles, with wooden barricades on top. The men wear cloth masks over their faces so as to block out any ash, and according to several doctors, the medium weave of the fabric will keep out fumes, although the later part has yet to be proven true. Barbarians flock to Avalonia seeking refuge from the volcano, and are trained as soldiers.

The diseased and poisoned tribal empires to the Northwest region of the Erinamian tribal region are suffering.  The now thriving underground cave-dwelling tribes in the hills have united and have made plans for overthrowing the greater tribes.

Until the clouds clear over the land and the water is safe, Erinaum will remain a simple, broken nation.  The cave inhabitants' morale has boosted when the unity plan has been made.  It is likely that these tribes will put together their differences and unite to form the country of Erinaum.
