Author Topic: +1 Reason why you should never use McAfee or Norton.  (Read 1818 times)

Welp, one of my friend's internet has been out for a while, and I finally got around to going over to take a look. As far as I can tell (Read: What google chrome mobile has told me) is that her anti-virus/firewall is preventing access to the internet. All of the cords and the modem seem in place fine, and Windows Update has no problem screaming at me that there are 20 updates to be installed off the internet. It seems that the stupid things are basically just preventing any browsers from doing anything useful. I tried disabling the firewall- Actually, well, I did disable the firewall completely, but there was no change, so that didn't really do anything. Attempting to start up Norton says that the computer needs to be restarted. Having done that, it still says so, so obviously it's as broken as always and of no use. McAfee points out that it needs internet to boot up so that I can fix the internet, which isn't terribly useful at all, and that too is out.
Any ideas? I'm sitting here on a borrowed laptop so I can put anything in play immediately. With my handy dandy flashdrive I could also take any images of anything you might need to see.

Halp.

avg is popular, but 3 times i have tried it over the years, its gotten in the way of things running properly. things i couldnt add exceptions to.

so forget it. i will continue my life without anti virus programs.

Never use two different antivirus softwares at once. Uninstall one of them.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials.

I'll probably try and get rid of them both and just stick AVG or Avast on it for now. Microsoft Defender is on here too, so I'm going to try and see if it has anything to say.

I've been using Comodo for some time now, works fine.

windows firewall can effect your ping on many games if you ever looking for a way to cut down on it. disable it.
you should depend solely on your modem/router's firewall you are likely also using already anyways.

She doesn't really play games anyway. Realistically all she uses the computer for is being silly on Gaia and reading Homestuck, so it could be much worse.

I use avira, you should try that.

or the free one:

Might take a shot.

She needs a new computer

Hell, that would probably be easier, yeah. .-.

avast

arrrr
or this if avira doesn't work, but I never had trouble with it

Here's your help.

I'm pretty sure both of those are antivirus programs

First of all if you didn't already, Uninstall one, because neither will work with the other on there.

I learned that the first time my computer crapped out.

Second of all, scan it for viruses,

Then if it has none, uninstall them both and get avast.

I don't use anything because I don't need to, my computer is purely used for Blockland forums, Youtube, Steam, disk-games, and BL itsself.

McAfee works fine for me. If it ever prevents a program's access to the internet, I can disable it.

Either it's Norton being a roosterface or you have some kind of virus loving stuff up.
