There needs to be stuff that actually gets to peoples heads though, like the feeling that somethings watching you the whole game, like a black figure that's in some of levels but hard to see, but when you do you can't stop noticing it.

Rendermen, Rendermen everywhere!

Seeing someone holding a sledgehammer over my computer.

Steve Jobs has talents beyond Bill Gates' chair trick, I see. I might not like his technology, but his talents are amazing.

Mannekinns.
Or those statue angels from Dr. Who

Having to stare at the monster, if you look away and try to do something about it, it will just be closer when you look again.

I don't think 3rd person is a good thing for horror, because it won't feel like it's you.

I much prefer what you can't see.

You just like the horror games where the first sounds remind you of love and after a few minutes love never sounds the same to you again. :iceCream:

s.t.a.l.k.e.r. does an amazing job with horror even though it's not a horror game. when you're creeping along in the underground bunkers, and you start hearing the deep rasping breathing of a mutant when you have almost no ammo, it's terrifying.

the combination of the game's ambient soundtrack, the ambience of the zone (outdoors - the shrieks of mutants in the distance, the wind rustling through the area. indoors - rusting fans squeaking as they slowly spin, shudders from metal supports in the distance), the game's sheer darkness (it's pitch black at night), the design of the mutants themselves and the noises they make, and the scarcity of ammunition and medical supplies make it a terrifying game at times.

Being truly alone, limited supplies, not knowing what is going on, paranioa, disturbing/creepy enemies.

I remember this game Cold Fear, I had no idea what it was about and still don't. It was truly scary, or it was because I was young. From what I remember though this game creeped me out and I never played it again, it was my friend's game anyways.

I was a wussy when I was little.

The chomping piano in SM64 scared the stuff out of me.
This TV putt-putt game had this tune, that made me go apestuff scared. I find the tune quite funny today.

Amnesia was a masterpiece of horror

helplessness is what makes me love horror games.

I'm never scared in a video game if I have a gun or weapon, no weapons, now that is a different story  :cookieMonster:

idea:

you're with your partner in an abandoned 18th century jail where townsfolk have reported that they hear noises that sound like either the raccoons that have been stealing their market food or just humans scavenging through it. you were told to investigate it with your partner, and you're deep inside it checking the cells. your partner insists on splitting up with you and heads down the corridor as you head the opposite direction.
after a couple minutes you hear her scream very loudly and you hear growling and noises of whatever it was' claws ravishing through her skin and bone. you hear a brick wall tear open and you infer that it travels through the inside of the walls.

etc.
