Author Topic: Substitute teachers bug me about my keyboard positioning.  (Read 3522 times)

People who impede on progress to follow the rules are missing the point of said rules.
In this case, the rule is to use home row because they believe it is faster, but you are faster without it.

Anyway I dodged a bullet by leaving the only school I've ever had with a typing class before reaching the grade for it. I learned on my own, and I type as fast as I need. (70 wpm i think)

I tend to keep my hands on their sides in accordance to home row, but I never have my fingers in that positioning. I also never use the right side shift key and I don't use my thumb for anything on my left hand. I press the space with my pointer finger.

i only use the right shift when im doing a slick 1 tap-slide question mark.
i cant imaging what else that key is for :o

I use left shift I never use right shifts unless I'm playing a game.

this is how I have mine, sometimes, depending on what I'm typing

Left hand:
Pinky (Shift)
Ring Finger (A, sometimes S)
Middle Finger (W, sometimes E)
Index Finger (D, sometimes F)
Thumb on spacebar

Right hand:
Index Finger (J, sometimes K)
Middle Finger (I, sometimes O)
Ring Finger (O, sometimes P or L)
Pinky Finger (; sometimes ' or L)
Thumb on spacebar

I got around 130 or more WPM and around 580 keystrokes, tapped, slid and banged around my keyboard for about 11 years

an other case of stupid people becoming stuff educators and thinking they know what's best for students. i do have my keys on the home row, but the thing is i actually type mostly with my middle fingers and i have a lot of over lap in where my fingers go to type. my old teacher used to piss me off about it and said i would never be able to get a good wpm. eventually i got pissed at her and did a typing test going as fast as i could. i got a 180 wpm with a relatively low forget up rate and she gave up.

My teacher doesn't enforce "home row" because she's awesome like that.

Same here.

My computer science teacher got on my ass about it, but I type 30wpm faster than she does.

My teacher says If you can type then it's all good with me.

Pretty much the same here except I only use my left thumb for space; my right thumb doesn't do anything, really. :(

The teacher I had for keyboarding made people have a cloth over their hands when the typed so they wouldn't be "tempted to look at the keyboard". Always bugged me and slowed me down because the cloth kept rubbing on my knuckles. I guess it made it easier not to use "Home Row" though.. =P

hell
i got suspended by my teacher for not using home row.
Im the fastest typer in nearly my whole school.
97 wpm, but im certain keyboards its like "forget" and get like 40.

Seriously? forget homerow, I just move my fingers to where they need to go, and last year I could beat my technology teacher easily.
