Should Badspot update the game engine?

Yes because the current engine is getting old
No, Blockland is fine the way it is
I dont care, as long as old add-ons still work

Author Topic: Update Blockland in the near future  (Read 1612 times)

For one person this is an extremely hard and huge task to do, but I think in the future (3-5 years from now) Badspot should update Blockland with the latest Torque engine (Torque 3D), or at least update it to another older engine (but not as old as 1.3 than 1.3 (Blocklands current engine, which is from 2001.

Some of you may say that Blockland wont even use half of the things Torque 3D can support but the good thing about that is even though we may not use it, it DOES support it, which is good in the log run because there will be many more developers that may be skilled at doing stuff the game engine supports. I know updating the engine will be a tedious task, with all the bug fixes and re coding the game again but years from now no one will want to buy Blockland because (one of its main competitors Roblox) will be having better graphics and features than Blockland (this is the same for any new building games that come out).

So if updating the game engine is possible and it wont break add-ons, then I think it should be done. Who agrees and disagrees?

roblox has an old engine, too. this is why both games don't have good lighting (roblox doesn't even have light sources other than one, which is just the general lighting of the entire map)

Roblox is creating dynamic lights, and they have already developed an iPad app. They also have developed dynamic lights for the iPad app as well.

It would be nice to have new engine features.
Ofcourse it would be nice, but I don't think Badspot wants to do that.

You may recall when Badspot said that both he and kompressor think it's a bad idea.

It's a bad idea to upgrade to Torque3D because Blockland simply does not need what it offers. Blockland is cartoony, simple. All that complex rendering and stuff isn't required. It has its own charm like Minecraft and Terraria do.

What would be nice to have is more shaders. I asked Badspot a few months ago about a L4D style outline of characters. There's also a dire need for selection what people see what. Coloring names green for your team, red for enemy teams, and white to non-minigame participants. Setting name distance on similar algorithms, etc, etc.

I PM'd him about a suggestion for the Skybox and he didn't even reply.

It kills me how little it seems he cares. There's all these cool ideas people have floating around and not a single forget is ever given about them. The only mod he accommodates is RTB.

Your telling me Roblox is not one of its main competitors? Who do you think is, Minecraft?

I do agree with you that Blockland will not use half of the features the new engine offers but it could use better terrain, realistic water, shadows (ambient occlusion) and more. The terrain does not have to look realistic, we could just use higher res. textures, the same thing for the water as well. If just the game engine itself can support these features then it just shows how much better Blockland would run since its a lot simpler.

might as well make a new game

Yes I am telling you that. And no not minecraft.
Tell me, how is roblox competing with blockland?

Badspot said he wouldn't update the engine.
Can't find the quote that says that though.

Children with a niche interest in building blocks and competitions/roleplay contained within their creations.

Definitely sounds like a competitor for ROBLOX and Minecraft to me, to be honest.
