It does make updates faster. What I meant by that is that they happen more often. Badspot has an easier way to distribute smaller updates that quickly fix issues or add bits of content, rather than waiting half a year just to see a one-line fix because he has to package it all into an installer so he waits till he does a bunch of other stuff before he releases said one-line fix.
I don't see how it makes updates take more bandwidth and makes downloading updates slower. There's a huge difference between downloading an entire installer just to have 90% of the files unchanged, as opposed to 2-3 files.
Let's see, for the client, for each launch:
  • Download manifest (happens on every launch)
  • Download all the modified files uncompressed individually (so uncompressed + HTTP roundtrip for each file)
  • Write the changed files into the cache (happens after each file is done downloading)
  • Verify the files on the HDD vs the hashes in the manifest
  • Write the changed files to the HDD from the cache
vs
  • Check version (can happen together with auth)
  • Download a single compressed archive (with SFX) of all the changed files (if it's updated)
  • Extract the changed files (if it's updated)

For generating the installers:
  • For each file (can be automated):
    • Upload to Amazon
    • Check the hash
    • Update the manifest appropriately
  • Upload the new manifest to Amazon
vs
  • Copy the output files and the NSIS script to a temp directory (can be automated)
  • Run NSIS
  • Upload installer to Amazon
and then for a vN-to-vN+1 updater:
  • Remove the unchanged files from the NSIS script (can be automated)
  • Run NSIS again
  • Upload updater to Amazon
  • Bump the version number on the auto-updater

V21 is coming. There is NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT. Who cares about your precious little terrains and interiors. Most of the time, they weren't even lined up with the brick grid, making building a pain in the ass. Not to mention they didn't even look Blocko. Besides, after already completely developing the shaders and shadows system, you think that Baddy and Komp will just discard all their work so you can keep a few crappy features?

Yeah what you said, but what you call crappy features may be not well made, but you're forgeting we're losing the terrains, which have had a lot of history with Blockland, I hate to lose them

If I had to choose I would choose shadows and shaders.

I've found only a few terrains were good. Slopes definitely wasn't one of them. It's too hard to build off of because too many bricks are "buried" or floating.

We can't have everything we ask for though.
The best thing would be enough. I'm not asking for anything else.

arguing about this is pointless and should be stopped

we should really consider new things that should come after the update, instead of just fighting over something we can't control

Slopes was fun as heck with skiing

no one is arguing, we're giving our opinions, you should join.

although we can't do anything about it we can give opinions.

that's called censorship

like people in democracies

im all for this. though baddy should give us some more terrain type bricks, building off of the deal with the cubes and water we have.

so we can pop up vast areas without the need to burn the brick total.
for those with needs for land lol

Something like this?

Not to mention the terrain generator of the past (which I always felt had little use, personally) if retooled to work with the new bricks, could create massive, unprecedented landscapes within seconds of clicking a button.

I mean, really think about that. Your server could have a completely unique landscape to build on. I mean, this is like taking the best aspect of Minecraft, the best aspect of Roblox (their new dynamic lighting) and then combining that with the already tried and true gameplay of Blockland.

So what you lose a few crappy maps? I'll admit, the bedroom was fun, but it never made my experience better. I know that as a veteran member, whenever we wanted to do serious building (whether it be sets for Block Wars or cities or DMs) we 99% of the time did them on a slate for complete control over the build. To say that we're really losing anything is, in reality, merely a small annoyance.

I have been pro V21 since I first heard about it, and I was still pro V21 when I heard we were losing terrains and interiors. And Iv'e been here for five years. Bisjac for more. Sure we can claim nostalgia about it, but then when all of us old cigarettes are for it, then I don't see why we can't all be for it.

Really, I feel both against and for this update.

FOR*: Blockland has been my favorite ever sence I started playing during version eight.  I never even really imagined Blockland with shadows and shaders.  But now that I've seen examples, I believe that Blockland would look, sound, feel, taste and even smell better with shadows and shaders.  It'll probably even attract more players to download and buy Blockland and maybe attract more Minecraft lovers.

AGAINST*: The maps The Slopes and Bedroom I beleive are the best maps that you can get on Blockland.  People love to host TDMs and floods and much more in The Slopes, and it's really hard to find a freebuild that isn't being hosted in either the Bedroom or the Skylands.  Plus, one of the greatest servers on Blockland at this moment, Boss Battles, is being hosted in the Bedroom.  Getting rid of the Bedroom and The Slopes will pretty much be getting rid of Blockland itself.

Rule 11.
what about it

I'm for the update. I never did anything serious on terrain maps or maps that are mainly interior. With brick-based terrain, you can do so much more anyways.

And I'm sure there will be a few terrain generators that pop up after the update. Hopefully some with infinite non-repeating terrain.
