To be honest, I don't like the mixed colours all that much. Perhaps have certain things a different colour, like the boards holding the supports together?

Yeah. I didn't like the mixed colours either. But yes, I can keep the boards multi-colored, to make look like they "scavanged" for materials to "repair" the towers.
