What is so bad about "bumping" anyway? I'm kinda new so I dont know what the fuss about it is. And the Manty thing was not bumping, someone posted on it right after me and I'm pretty sure telling someone to not bump is bumping aswell.
The problem with bumping is that it's often unneeded.
If you bump a topic from a number of pages back, it gets sent to the front and pushes other, new and more relevant topics backwards, preventing them from being seen as easily.
only reply in topics that are on the first or second page.
don't sit there and search for at topic on the 7th page to post in, because it hasn't been posted in for a while for a reason.
This rule is true for the most part.
You shouldn't bump topics that are very old.
The only time it's really valid to post in an older topic is if you have information that is relevant to the topic.
For example, the
Prequel topic gets buried quite a bit and is currently, at this time of writing, 8 pages back. However, when Prequel updates and new information regarding the topic, in this case a webcomic, comes up, it will be posted in again and bumped forward.
That is fair.
You shouldn't bump a topic that is about a question if the question has already been answered.
You shouldn't bump a topic with non-useful information.
You shouldn't bump a topic just to cause an argument with other members.
If you have something to say to another member after they have posted in a topic which is considerably buried, you should PM that member what you have to say. It's not worth it to bump an entire topic forward for a discussion with one member.
If you have a topic that you created, or one that you are active in, and it gets buried, then you can bump it a little bit.
From the first 5 pages would be acceptable. Beyond that it would be expected that you have new information.
You may bump a topic, but if no one replies and it gets buried again you should refrain from re-bumping it.
Double bumps are normally ignored, but when you triple or quadruple bump it isn't fair.
Your topic is clearly not interesting enough or no longer relevant.
Bumping topics is fine so long as you have reason to do so and you do it in moderation.
A simple "Bump" is fine, but if you can provide more information that is better. Or if you have a dying topic, perhaps bump it and try stimulating it with a question to other forum members.
Also, a question to anyone who knows the answer, how long ago does the last post in a topic have to be before it becomes impossible to post in?
