Author Topic: Image of servers in games  (Read 1589 times)

Trolling?
doubt it, there are two mindsets here
people who think it means showing the images on the server gui, and those who think it's a single image loaded when you click on a server

Trolling?
no?

i'm thinking it would lag your computer since the image would take so long to load.

Try downloading an image from the browse servers page. From the few I've downloaded, none have exceeded 100kb. If that takes long to load and lags your computer, I'm surprised your computer can even run Blockland.

If you can run Blockland at 30 FPS and have a slightly below average or better internet connection, it'll usually take just around 0.1 seconds or so per image in the list.

Besides, you don't have to load all of them at once. Just load them as you scroll down the list.

You, port. Make this and let me see the code.

The issue is that Badspot has expressed dislike of this idea previously, most likely due to bandwidth reasons (could be pretty bad for the blockland.us server if a ton of people use the add-on).

I didn't say you or I should release it, I want to see how you process images.

Would making the image load when looking at the server preview be easier on the bandwidth?

What server preview?

Which is why you just make it obey proper cache control headers, assuming that the server actually sends those. If the add-on obeys the HTTP spec for cache control and the server doesn't that's his problem, not ours.

It'd be really nice if the server didn't make partially-updated images available, frankly. It'd be even nicer if it just uploaded the whole image from your server if more than, say, 1000 changes (placement, recolor, removal of bricks) have been made since the last upload. Or if you could manually upload a screenshot if you're verifiably the host of the server and you take the screenshot in-game, to prevent false screenshots.

I was thinking about that, but it could lead to some problems. The host could easily show a server preview of an awesome looking build to draw people in but in reality have some crappy freebuild up

Maybe instead of having the image in the list itself, there should be a button that downloads and displays the image in a new GuiWindowCtrl.

What server preview?

I meant for RTB, like an addition to it.

maybe it could work with that RTB addon that shows extra information for servers in the server list

that would work great, so that you dont have to DL tons of images every time you query the master server

I think I vaguely remember Ephialtes saying this would be in RTB5 but I think I also may have dreamed that.
