Author Topic: Is Evolution a Scientific Law, Theory, or both?  (Read 7502 times)

I've discovered a lot of intelligent controversy over this. Evolution is well-known as a scientific theory, but it has gained so much evidence that we can even see it in action in laboratories (speciation and micro-evolution). According to Google, a scientific law states a repeated observation about nature. Now that it has been observed, should we call it a law, a law and a theory, or still a theory?

it will never become a law. theories cannot become laws or vice versa

so what you're saying is that if we prove that the big bang created the universe, it will still be a theory?

A scientific theory is a lot harder to get then people think.

don't put it up with me, put it up with the scientists who have said this over and over

theories are explanations of something
laws are a description of natural phenomena

no stuffstorm here, this is my opinion.

isn't it a little weird if we came from monkeys and that crap.

What do you mean "is it a theory" of course it is?
There isn't much question to it.

We didn't come from monkeys, we descended from early apes, monkeys are our cousins.

Keep in mind a scientific law does not imply uncertainty. It means an answer taken from indirect evidence, but the process itself has not been seen. Darwin saw the changes left by Evolution, and published his theory. But it has now been observed, which makes it more viable to be a law.

laws are a description of natural phenomena
Evolution describes how everything came to be so diverse.

well, I don't care.

sometimes when i see idiots spamming on servers i want to believe that their ancestors were monkies :cookieMonster:

no.

no.
What do you mean no? That post was completely logical.
Something that hasn't been proven can't become a fact/law.

Yes it can.
If you have a theory about me not having a dog, you dont know for sure. But if you come to my house and see that I do have a dog, that is no longer a theory, it is fact.

Like I said, it has been physically observed in laboratories and even a few times naturally.
