Author Topic: Is Evolution a Scientific Law, Theory, or both?  (Read 7542 times)

I blame public schools teaching the definition of theory incorrectly.

My science teacher last year was really strict on the correct definition of theory which I really appreciated.
My science teacher just never defined it. Which lead to people taking theory as the layman definition.

I also wonder if Mystroo changed after this...

My science teacher last year was a Christian and all year she tried to disprove sciencey stuff
Get her fired.

actually i was halfway through saying that people have the basic mental ability to have faith in something and that generalizations shouldn't be made about how everyone in a group is stupid/handicapped/ignorant/misinformed because they believe something but i stopped halfway through and said the first half

mainly regarding stuff like this
To the creation-tards

If you still deny evolution in favor of handicapped religious beliefs

but w/e people are still going to insult entire groups of people because of a few individuals

Get her fired.
I talked to the principle but he didn't care. Whatever, it was fun to debate stuff with her.

wat

Creationists are, by definition, deniers of evolution. That makes them all misinformed. That's not a generalization.

I didn't say all religious people were handicapped.

im pretty sure that narkro only made this thread so he could start a religion war, which isnt much of a surprise to me considering he's always had a stick up his ass when it comes to religion.

sometimes i feel ashamed that these kind of ridiculous arguments happen on the forums. so what if some people dont believe in a god, or so what if they do. you guys need to seriously stop bickering and slapping each other in the face over such menial things, what exactly do you hope to gain by arguing about this stuff?

Educate yourself. What you've said is incorrect.
What I said was perfectly correct.

Quote
Theory: In science, a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can incorporate facts, laws, inferences, and tested hypotheses.

Creationism is an explanation for why everything is here. At the time Creationism was thought up the inferences that were made were true, because people didn't understand genetics or fossils. So creation is an old theory. What makes it fail is that is doesn't change when new evidence is found. Today it is not a strong theory at all, but thousands of years ago it was.

Thousands of years from now many theories made up today are going to sound stupid. Science never stops.

calling people creation-tards really sounds like a generalization of a group

calling people creation-tards really sounds like a generalization of a group
Creation-tard is defined as someone who believes in Creationism.

I'm a bit late to the party,
But I'm pretty sure you've started some controversy stew, mate.

Creation-tard is defined as someone who believes in Creationism.

then call them a creationist

calling people creation-tards really sounds like a generalization of a group

I attributed the 'tard' suffix because of the single trait that group shares. There is no generalization in there anywhere.

That's like saying 'people that play golf are golfers' is a generalization.

Evolution is a law.

Evolution via natural selection is a theory.

A law states what happens based on observation, a theory explains why it happens.

For example: Charles's law states that gases tend to expand when heated. A theory might explain why this occurs.

EDIT: By evolution I mean that things change over time, not the actual theory because that includes natural selection.

If those inferences are now false, then it's refuted.

It's a theory because you can't completely prove it imo
