Author Topic: CGI or animatronics? (New Poll)  (Read 3033 times)

I like it when it's a mixture of CGI and animatronics

Jurassic park's effects were amazing when it came out.

well if its animated movie (avatar counts as animated, the thing is loving 90% cgi) its fine.

but when you have cgi elements in a live action movie, its noticeable and bad. even the new hulk from avengers was obvious and stuffty.
oh god the first time he jumped onto the side of the building in the end scene and smashed all the aliens into the wall

so bad

Jurassic park still looks amazing even now. but look at the 2nd and 3rd ones... they have so much animated stuff, it ruined the movies.

with robots, you can argue that they dont move realistically maybe. though that has gotten better over the years.
but the appearance is as real as it gets. cgi dosnt come close

CGI are computer generated images. In a movie like say "Over the Hedge" the entire movie is CGI but in Real life movies they're so obvious and look like stuff. Example : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMeTTiRz9Ls

Animatronics are stop motion robots that when done right look amazing
They also can be in real time using robotics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdjhRZOhdXU

You're a complete idiot. You chose the worst example of CGI you could find compared to the best animatronic example you could find.
When it's done properly it looks proper amazing.
Everything in that video is CGI.

Please try reading the topic before flinging insults from your starfish.
I'm trying to show off CGI with people who don't know how to use it properly. (Which is a lot) That's why people should stick with Animatronics.

Condense it to the opening post then. I don't have time to read through every stuffty topic.

The only post that changes anything is this one:

i like robots and makeup/costumes in movies more then animated stuff.

no matter how good cgi gets, its still obvious and stuffty.
at some point you get to the "but his eyes are supposed to be under his mouth.."-part though.
but if it's something you can do good with makeup, sure.

next let's compare cars!
this vs this!
see how bad the first one is? it's all broken and stuff

CGI is bad because stuffty movies are stuffty? are you kidding me?

Then don't post at all if you think its so stuffty, just leave unless you get the brains to actually read first.

It would be incredibly hard to do that for a movie though, that guy probably took years just to do those few cutscenes.

which is why we keep moving forward. keep making it better faster stronger.
ofc we could just be stuck in the 90's instead.

Windows Movie Maker at its finest right there.

CGI will be amazing in the up and coming decade. With Mo-Cap, animations can be immensely realistic and the bettering in technology, we will have utterly realistic cgi models. We're so close too, I mean look at loving Avatar.

As I said before, it depends on the overall theme of the movie. There is no need for CGI if you can just make a robot that looks just as good if not better.

Stop motion all the way bro

CGI takes years to learn how to make it look incredibly good such as the video you posted. You need certain programs to even Practice it. With Animatronics, most kids have experience playing with legos and a camera, or even those small little engines from kids toys. Kids would be more trained in Animtronics as they reach their highschool years. Where as learning CGI, takes special courses in schools. Animitronics has the upper hand because it's simple to learn and the people who build them have most likely trained throughout school years with cameras and stick figures. CGI takes time and there will be less animators because nobody has an idea of how to do it before entering High school.
