Author Topic: A decent space map...  (Read 28275 times)

I think I will just stick with a model as the sun. If someone can produce a working, good-lucking, emitter that doesnt lag...call me   :)  (well..PM me)

As for the realism issue that many seem to be worried/glad/intruiged about. The answer is in between. I want it to be playable and am constrained by TGE restrictions. I am however doing what I can too maintain some level of realism. The planets (as I have said many times) are very, very far away and a custom vehicle will likely be needed. The planets are also huge.

Features I think would be kickass and might work....

>Rotating cloud layers (to bring the planets alive)
>Proper sun effect  (any one got an emitter for sale?)
>Custom interplanetary transport (lots of speed, capacity and comfort)
>Oxygen system complete with airtanks, airzones and death! (Nice challenge for the coders out there)
>Atmospheric Conditioning system (adds to oxgen system, means that things like temp and pressure must be kept stable)

Features you definetly won't see...

>moving/rotating planets (as if)
>A map with planets spaced billions/trillions of miles apart
>Easter eggs  (Ok...maybe just a few :)  )
>DM friendly (I HATE DMs. Build you own! >:(  )

Ok....thats my 'wish list' finished.

Sounds better every time you post. (just don't get rushed and leave out detail pls)

Modders start your engines, lol

Ya...sounds like its time to start a competition.

Design and make the best Space Travel vehicle you can and submit it. Winner gets the vehicle featured in the map. I will make a seperate thread in Add-ons section so don't post here.

AND THE WINNER IS : Kaje.   (just kidding...I just made the competition)

Wow...I am getting that alot. You guys must have been really let down in the past. I mean, most of the time people want you to hurry up...not take your time. :)

Shiz, RW, that looks AWESOME!

I love how I said Modders start you engines, and you end up making a competition....lol

I think it's been proven when a map is made fast, it isn't nearly as good as it can be, and now everyone is looking for good quality maps, not tons of crappy maps...

Thanks :)

On a side note....I really, really hope that people understand how the planets work. You do not build on the sphere. There is a semi-sphere inside that sphere that has a large flat surface to build on. I don't want to disapoint people if they perhaps misunderstood how the planets work.

You should make another Video that shows your progress so far, that'd be cool....(and show the distance between planets)

I was thinking that too. Maybe soon. Unfortunately the distance is not easy to show in a video; only ingame can one truly appreciate how far away the planets are from each other.

Heres an interesting picture showing how the planets are composed in my map. Please note that this picture does not include a possible cloud layer that I have yet to make work.

Anyway...the explanation.

Starting from right to left.

The earth texture on the sphere is a DTS. It has no collision so you can fly through it. It encompasses the 'planet' but has been cutaway for the picture.

The white sliver you see there is the atmostphere. It can only be seen from the inside and prevent occupants of earth from seeing into space. It too has been cutaway for the picture.

The final piece of the puzzle is the interior. That is the round, semisphere which is brown and green. You can stand, walk and most importantly, build on the green surface.

The bit which cannot be shown in a picture is that each planet also has a gravity field placed around it and they are unique so that each planet has its own styles.

Will you be making the "silver area" looking like the color of the sky for each planet, and will moons have a atmosphere? (like the silver area, or will you be able to see right through)

Yes, earth has a blueish/whiteish sky, mars has an orange sky and others will recieve their own in due time.

Moons will not have an atmosphere as their gravitational pull is not great enough to sustain a gaseous atmosphere. So, yes, you will be able to see into space when on the moons.

Ok, I am at a tough decision now. I have had no luck making a transparent cloud layer.

My debate is whether to add the cloud layer to the earth texture so it would be one piece. or to just not have a cloud layer at all.

Screens of the 2 will be posted shortly.

EDIT: Heres a picture of what earth looks like with the cloud texture melded with normal earth texture. I think it looks like crap. The camera is facing the Americas if you can't tell.

I know, theres not much I can do to change that.

This map is starting to remind me of Celestia.
