Author Topic: Petition to remove tax exempt status from churches - More detail inside  (Read 1148 times)

Sorry if the title is a bit misleading, I couldnt figure out a way to make it all fit. What the title SHOULD say is "Enforce federal 501(c)(3) regulations by removing the tax-exempt status from churches that engage in political activity."
Quote from: Richard Dawkins Foundation
Since 2008, pastors of some churches have openly supported and advocated specific political candidates in sermons to members in early October in an event referred to as "Pulpit Freedom Sunday". According to Reuters, videos of these sermons are sent to the offices of the IRS.

According to section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, the provision of the tax code from which these churches derive their tax-exempt status, a compliant organization must not "participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of ... any candidate for public office."

The IRS has failed to remove the tax-exempt status of these churches despite their violations of tax code. This must change, and the law must be applied equally to everyone.

yes, and removing the taxes from the same kind of people that put the cat in the cement, is pretty dumb.

i wouldn't vote for any petition that tries to attack the church.

You didnt read. It removed the tax exempt status, meaning that churches that engage in political activity would have to pay taxes.

how did you misread the title that bad :P

considering a LOT of cats have been buried in concrete ever since the guy left the church, and the odds that cats suddenly live their lives only to drown themselves in concrete is extremely low.

It only exists to tax churches that have political involvement. This would not mean taxing a church because a candidate is of a certain religion. Its only purpose is to make sure they follow the tax code. :I
