Author Topic: Why does Television suck ass these days?  (Read 2010 times)

There's lots of great shows. Don't know what talks is talking about

I constantly rant on the new Figure it Out. Out of the what, 50 new episodes, I can only think of one decent episode ( Plays bongos while bouncing on pogo stick )

The King Arthur Legend (?)
I wouldn't trust this to a documentary.
There's way too much folklore and variation in the story, and it's based on a rather small amount of actual history.

It would be too easy for it to be turned into a "what-if" documentary, where there is no real or logical discussion, just weirdo nut-jobs who've somehow been given credentials from universities you've never heard of, spouting random nonsense for an hour.

Unfortunately ancient british (Or Celtic/Anglo/Saxon) mythology isn't very well kept, and it's so varied from place to place, and lasted centuries as common wives tales without being written down, so it's rather difficult to pin anything onto it in a truly factual documentary.

It's even difficult with Norman Britain history, for example, the legends of Robin Hood.
I've watched a couple of documentaries on that where they can place a mixture of local folklore and some recordings of local government to hint at some real life Robin Hood, whether it was the actual legendary figure or not.
And even though that story is less than a millenium old it's difficult to research it and make a program about it that doesn't rely on a lot of speculation.
And beyond that, they only avoided the crack-pot theorists by putting in film of them showing how one would've lived in that time, such as reconstructions of bandit raids, archery, sieges and other such stuff.

That's just a ramble though. I agree that it would be great if the History Channel were to do more historic pieces that weren't based on World War 2.
They've put the majority of that stuff on the Military History Channel, but even so, they never show much that isn't American History.

Which to me, is personally rather boring.
I'm more interested in other periods of history, and they're not very good at showing those.
There's so much more to the world than just America, that it seems a bit of a waste that they barely show anything not about the US.

They could do countless things on European, African, South American, Australasian or Asian history, and they would have further back to do programs on.
North American history doesn't span as far back as the rest of the world.
And I prefer the more ancient stuff.

Cartoon Network during the day.........
It's like the people who make the shows get high, smash their heads against a wall, and hope that they will come up with some awesome show that looks exactly like their deranged hallucinations.

holy forget Hey Arnold was the stuff.

i only use tv for sports and all the things on my dvr. tons of good shows though

Every other channel: HOLY stuff GUYS PAWN STARS IS SO SUCCESSFUL WE BETTER GET INTO SOME OF THIS stuff.

Now we have Hardcore Pawn and whatnot.

Used to watch Military Channel a lot, but then I stopped watching after I saw almost the entire channel was buried in "new" national socialist discoveries and documentaries on WWII and Riddler.

Television has been going downhill since 2000

I agree. I knew the King Arthur Legend was mythical, and most likely not true. It's kinda why I put the (?)

But I'm glad someone agrees with me about different aspects of history. :D

Sometimes documentaries on legends are really good.
If it's of the period of legend of Robin Hood for example, when things are recorded, then you can see how the legends come about from relation to actual events.
Or if it's from different cultures, like ancient Greek, Egyptian and Persian legends, then there's loads of preserved evidence to show how the legends were shared, expanded, revered and how they influenced their respective cultures.

Unfortunately England doesn't have a very good set of recorded myths and legends. None of it was written down, and unlike the Greeks and others, it was never really inscribed into things like pottery and such.

I'd love to see a good documentary on Arthurian legends, since I absolutely love them, but unfortunately it's not something that many people are able to be factual on, in any way. Leaves too much room for producers and such to make stuff up just for the sake of it.
