The King Arthur Legend (?)
I wouldn't trust this to a documentary.
There's way too much folklore and variation in the story, and it's based on a rather small amount of actual history.
It would be too easy for it to be turned into a "what-if" documentary, where there is no real or logical discussion, just weirdo nut-jobs who've somehow been given credentials from universities you've never heard of, spouting random nonsense for an hour.
Unfortunately ancient british (Or Celtic/Anglo/Saxon) mythology isn't very well kept, and it's so varied from place to place, and lasted centuries as common wives tales without being written down, so it's rather difficult to pin anything onto it in a truly factual documentary.
It's even difficult with Norman Britain history, for example, the legends of Robin Hood.
I've watched a couple of documentaries on that where they can place a mixture of local folklore and some recordings of local government to hint at some real life Robin Hood, whether it was the actual legendary figure or not.
And even though that story is less than a millenium old it's difficult to research it and make a program about it that doesn't rely on a lot of speculation.
And beyond that, they only avoided the crack-pot theorists by putting in film of them showing how one would've lived in that time, such as reconstructions of bandit raids, archery, sieges and other such stuff.
That's just a ramble though. I agree that it would be great if the History Channel were to do more historic pieces that weren't based on World War 2.
They've put the majority of that stuff on the Military History Channel, but even so, they never show much that isn't American History.
Which to me, is personally rather boring.
I'm more interested in other periods of history, and they're not very good at showing those.
There's so much more to the world than just America, that it seems a bit of a waste that they barely show anything not about the US.
They could do countless things on European, African, South American, Australasian or Asian history, and they would have further back to do programs on.
North American history doesn't span as far back as the rest of the world.
And I prefer the more ancient stuff.
