I keep crashing. All the time. I'll be playing, and either sound stops completely, and "HL2.exe has stopped working..." will come up, or sound will loop for 2 seconds, then stop, and "HL2.exe has stopped responding..."

Clean reinstall failed
Veryify / defrag files failed
DXLevel 8 or whatever that was called failed
It used to never crash, and suddenly it does...

I'll try to get a bit more info on it soon, there doesn't seem to be an error log or anything...

Nope, I got rid of anything custom several weeks ago. Especially after a clean install.

I just had the best idea:
The surplus scalpel
- Damage inflicted does not cause the enemy to scream, bleed, or play any sort of noise or notify them in any way other than their health decreasing they have been hit.
- -25% damage
- -25% swing speed
Crafted an athletic supporter NOOOOOO
Combined with a craft hat and got hero's tail

Could this be part of the problem? It happens to me too on some servers. My custom sounds, models akd what not won't appear. Then it crashes, usually in the heat of battle.

yes

those servers are running sv_pure and custom sounds, possibly only ones that are longer than a second (my modified frying pan sound is only reduced to unappealing screeching), will cause the game to crash

Some custom content can be exploited to gain an advantage.
