The only things complicated about BL are VCE, bot events, and the community. Once you fiddle with either one, they'll become as simple as 1 2 3.
The actual building mechanics can be a little bit tricky and/or fiddly for a newer member to use at first.
Lots of players when they were new, myself included, would be considerably slow at building as well as unsure on how best to build. Do you manually try to place all your bricks down with the brick tool, or do you place a ghost and start moving it all around with all your different commands? Is it easier to build your stuff then spray-paint it, or to select the colour of each brick before it goes down? How do I move bricks of different sizes quickly (how do I activate and use Super Shift)?
Eventing can also be difficult for a person to understand initially. I've personally seen a couple cases where people in game have asked for help with working out what a specific input or output does, or how to fill in the variables on an output.
I myself had to ask on the forums how to use relays, as I didn't know how. And I had to re-load Demo House a number of times to reteach myself how to make a toggleable light switch.
I would definitely say that if you were going to be fair and do a review or a Let's Play of Blockland, then you should definitely take atleast a little bit of time to complete the tutorial and have a couple hours playing around and trying to learn to get to terms with all the controls.
Otherwise, just jumping in, you could very much throw yourself in at the deep end. If you're expecting to be able to start up for the first time and build the Lego Death Star, or w/e, then you're going to be disappointed and you're going to give a bad first impression of Blockland.
