I do this and everyone I know generally asks by brand name.
"I'm gonna get a Coke", "I want a 7Up", "Do you want a Lilt?"

I wouldn't really call fizzy drinks Sodas. I'd call drinks like Pepsi and Coke 'Cola', and otherwise I'd refer to all similar drinks as "Soft Drinks" or "Fizzy drinks".
