So far ive unlocked the Engi ship, the slug ship, and the rock ship, but I still feel like the default ship is the best

Zoltan Layout B is my favorite ship. The double ions keep the weapons down while your pike beam tears a hole in their ass. All you need to do is get some real shields on it and you're pretty good.

I only have basic and engi ship with both layouts. I never get events to get new ships

So far I have the zoltan, the default and the engi.
All with layout B unlocked.

Just got a mod that stops the fleet from coming, so you can explore more of the game.

Im having a lot more fun with the game this way.

Burst Laser II x2 + Pike Beam x2 + Weapon Pre-Igniter = everything is brown townly raped by your ship.
Even if you deliberately take all shields offline.

You havent been playing much, then.
I think you get the engi ship when you reach the 5th sector, which I got to my first playthrough.
