What is Mario Kart?
Mario Kart is a series of racing games including Mario themed characters. Produced and developed by Nintendo, the Mario Kart series started in 1992 and it's most recent game was in 2011. To date, there have been four Mario Kart games for home consoles, three portable games, and two Namco co-developed arcade games, giving a total of nine Mario Kart games. It is one of the most infamous racing series in the video game industry.

Games:

Super Mario Kart (SNES):

Released on August 27, 1992, this is the first Mario Kart game in the series. There are eight playable characters and each of the four cups contains five different tracks for a total of twenty unique tracks, additionally there are four unique Battle Mode courses. It used the Super Nintendo's Mode 7 graphics to render a 3D environment, also used in StarFox. This title features a Grand Prix mode, Time Trials, Match Race, and Battle Mode. It has been ranked among the best games of all time by several organizations including Edge, IGN, The Age and GameSpot, while Guinness World Records has named it as the top console game ever.

Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo 64):

The second Mario Kart game was released December 14, 1996 and is considered a gold classic of gaming. The move to three-dimensional graphics allowed for track features not possible with the original game's Mode 7 graphics, however, the characters and items remained 2D pre-rendered sprites. Mario Kart 64 was originally going to be released by the name "Super Mario Kart R" and replace the character of Donkey Kong with a Magikoopa. An offical soundtrack for the game was also released, along with action figures.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit (GBA):

Released July 21, 2001, this is the first Mario Kart title for a handheld console. The game resembled Super Mario Kart due to the similarity in graphics between the SNES and GBA. The game features 20 original race tracks, as well as 20 from Super Mario Kart. It was well received by reviewers and critics, but it is considered the worst game in the series. On July 28, 2011, Nintendo announced that Mario Kart: Super Circuit, as well as nine other Game Boy Advance games, would be available to limited Nintendo 3DS owners, via Virtual Console, to whom will participate in the Ambassador Program after Nintendo officially issued a price-cut to the Nintendo 3DS on August 12, 2011.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (GameCube):

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was released November 7, 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube. It included a few new features, mainly the Dual-Racing. Dual-Racing allowed two characters to race in one kart, and switch spots throughout the race. This feature was exclusive to Double Dash!!, and hasn't been introduced in another game as of 2012. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! has received generally favorable reviews. According to the NPD Group, Double Dash!! was the best-selling game of November 2003.

Mario Kart DS (Nintendo DS):

Mario Kart DS was released on the Nintendo DS on November 14, 2005. It was the first Mario Kart game to be released in North America before the release in Japan. Mario Kart DS is the first Mario Kart iteration to support online play. This seems to be one of the most popular games in the franchise, due to the amount of 22.57 million units sold worldwide. The game features five single-player game modes: Grand Prix, Time Trial, Vs, Battle, and Mission. While racing or battling, the Nintendo DS' top screen offers a third-person perspective of the player's kart, while the bottom touchscreen shows the race's current standings, items carried by each racer, and a map of the course.

Mario Kart Wii (Wii):

Mario Kart Wii was released April 10, 2008 and utilized the Wii's wireless controller function. A wheel shaped controller holder was included with some copies of the game, and acted is as if the player were actually driving the kart. This title included many new characters and tracks, including Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy. The game won multiple Wii-specific awards from IGN in its 2008 video game awards, including Best Racing Game and Best Online Multiplayer Game. IGN also nominated it for Best Family Game for the Wii.

Mario Kart 7 (3DS):

Mario Kart 7 is the latest installment in the Mario Kart franchise and was released December 1, 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS. The game was utilized in real 3D using the 3DS' 3D visuals. The game features sixteen playable Mario characters, including Wiggler, Honey Queen, Lakitu, and Metal Mario, who are new to the series, as well as Mii characters saved in the Nintendo 3DS Mii Maker for a grand total of seventeen. A new feature was added in Mario Kart 7 which allowed the kart to transform into a hang-glider and a submarine. An update was released for MK7 due to a glitch that allowed players to skip over a significant portion of the track in some courses. The update launched on the Nintendo eShop May 2012 and anyone who didn't download it cannot play online multiplayer. Mario Kart 7 has received generally positive reviews. It holds an 85/100 rating on Metacritic based on 60 critic reviews and an 84.96% rating on GameRankings based on 45 reviews.

Arcade Titles:
Mario Kart Arcade GP and Arcade GP 2 are the only Arcade Mario Kart titles. Both developed by Namco, Arcade GP is the first and only game in the Mario Kart series to have Pac-Man, Namco's official mascot, as a playable character. There are a total of six stages, with four tracks in each. After a track is completed, the player must insert additional credits to continue the game, even if first place is achieved. Not much is known about these games due to lack of Mario Kart Arcade GP machines left.

GBA one was the best one imo <3
I don't know how you can say that, the ds version beat it in almost every way.

I don't have a favorite mario kart. All of them are insanely awesome. Every time I hear the soundtrack of the GBA one I get a nostalgasm, especially with the Sunset Wilds and Cheese Land soundstrack. Damn, I loved those levels.
