Bartering is a stuff system when used for actual commerce because i might not want what you have. it's all fine and dandy when you're talking about essentials like grain or water, but you may have a surplus of roofing tiles and want my lounge chairs, you'd need to go through a long process to trade those tiles into something I'm willing to trade for my chairs. A monetary system lets us trade a constant for goods, so we can store the value as well as only go through the process of selling once.

Money is just a relative term for exchange. As long as there is a supply and demand then there will be money. The question might be: If money did not exist as we know it then what do you have to offer in exchange to get what you need to live?
