If I wanted to play a pre-Bethesda Fallout game, which one would you recommend?
Fallout 2

Tactics.
Ehhh. I haven't played tactics, so I don't really know about it, but I definately think Fallout 2 would be the best game for someone wanting to play a prebethesda fallout. Though, the steam version is a bit forgeted up, but its easy to gix

i cant wait for Fallout 4/5/Whatever they call it

But they haven't said anything about it so... I hope they actually do make it. And they make it harder than Skyrim was.

they are making a Fallout 4. I'm expecting an announcement late 2013, and the actual game in 2014.
I'm just scared that Bethesda is going to be making "Skyrim with guns" :c

skyrim with guns would be loving amazing though

i mean, with fallout's leveling system. but everything else...

imho, they could take fallout new vegas add a new map, more content, revise a few things or they could complete remake it.
but as long as they keep the story, karma, relation, levelling,SPECIAL and weapon system (including ammo types and mods) i'll buy it and put over 100 hours into it.

the only thing I want from Skyrim in the next Fallout is the stunning visuals

i want the crafting system.
fallout has always been a kind of put-together theme, but I always feel that's it's been put together by others
I want to do the put-togethering

i just love how fallout new vegas handled story progression and weapons.
in FO3 and Skyrim you can really play the same thing multiple times. Skyrim I always play Khajiit or Wood Elf, Imperial, evil, Thief/Archer
but FNV... even if i try to play the same, i always go "oh look, a new gun I haven't seen before, i want to use it"
or "i never went this way in  the story before, and now i have an army of enclave veterans fighting with me"

even if i do the same NCR w/ Boomers, Securitrons, i will always have some new gun, or if I have the same guns, I'll have some new explosive ammo, or Hp ammo.

Skyrim I always end the game with the best gear, because it is so easy to see "this is the best" fallout is different. shotgun, sniper, assault rifle, MG, grenade launmcher

so varied, no definite "best." it's all opinion.

Personally I find some weapons to be really really damn strong and just overall prefer them over other weapons :

Like for example Mercy , the unique grenade machine gun.
It fires large 40mm rounds instead of the tiny 25mm grenades.
I haven't used it until the final battle ... and it just wrecked havoc all over the place.
It's ridiculous how easily it just rips squads of elite legionaries apart.
Then there's Oho , Baby. No melee weapon is that devastating and balanced at the same time. Sure there are other very good melee weapons that can do the job ( Knock-knock , Chance's knife ) but if you really need some big mean bastard dead then you will need that Super hammer.
The Gun runner's arsenal add-on throws in a bunch of new unique weapons including a unique turbo-plasma caster like the ones in Fallout 1 & 2. Well do you know the plasma caster in NV which you can find almost broken in the Van Graff's shop on the table ? It's pretty much the strongest plasma weapon. The unique version is just as devastating but it's fully automatic and has twice the ammo capacity.
Then there's YCS 186 , This machine , Knock-knock , Chance's knife , All-American and finally Lucky ( for the smaller targets).

Those are pretty much my favorite unique weapons.

You should use the wild wasteland perk for the alien gun, it only has 130 shots and you can't find ammo anywhere else (unless you do the ammo dupe glitch) and it is always accurate

I dont like the alien gun. I like the OP gun you get without the perk.

That is the YCS 186 , the unique Gauss rifle
