When he dropped the machete straight into his head, that had to be the best scene of the series ever

Maybe somebody can clarify something for me. When Herschel got bit they cut his leg off so the bite wouldn't turn him into a zombie when he dies. But they have all established that they are all infected anyway and therefore if they die they will become zombies anyway. So, what was the point of cutting off Herschel's leg if he is already infected anyway?

I don't think there's a real answer seeing as how nobody has much of a clue how the "disease" works. I guess it's sort of like cancer seeing as how you are already carrying the cells for it, but where cancer requires the right conditions to form, zombification requires a bite. Though apparently getting rid of the body part where the bite occured can halt the zombification process.

Something like that.

This is how it seems to me: When you die, you become a zombie. If a zombie bites you, if you die or not, you become a zombie. They cut Hershel's leg off before the disease could spread to his whole body and become a zombie.

But in the first season they litteraly covered themselves in zombie blood with no risk of infection.

The zombie was dead, there was no disease alive in him.
The zombies hunt them by smell, so they covered themselves in the guts...Then it rained.

Isnt it a virus?
I dont think it actually needs nutrients to live because its not alive, just strands of dna/protien.

Well when the zombies touch them they don't get the disease so, you turn when you get bitten or die.
They didn't get bitten or die, but they just covered themselves they suffered no injuries from
THE WALKING DEAD.
Heh
and also It isn't really a virus. It's an infection from the bite.

They all have the disease so it doesnt matter if theyre covered in zombie blood as long as the zombie is dead and its not in any open wounds.

The disease is activated upon death, but it can also be activated through the bite/scratch of a zombie - basically, if your blood is contaminated with an active form of the disease.

They cut off his leg to prevent the infection from activating the disease within him.

Mfw the inmates try to go gang style on their first walker.

Okay, look at it this way - they all have the virus that turns them into Walkers when they die.
No matter how they die, as long as the brain is still intact, they will come back as a Walker because of the (I assume airborne) virus.

The bites infect them with a deadly fever. I mean c'mon, they're walking corpses, full of bacteria and all that jazz and are alive because of some crazy virus.

So anyways, the bites infect them with a deadly fever which kills people - and so then because of the other virus, they come back as Walkers.

Makes more sense than my theory lol.
