always wanted this
Hopefully I'll be able to pull it off.

I'm working on a Google form in case anybody is interested. I tried one before and it worked really well, this one should be up soon.

It's on the OP now.

Floating island wild west mixed with some awsome sci-fi stuff.

A once rich and lively planet cracked into chunks due to some tampering in the core, which resulted in smaller-bigger floating islands floating around what used to be the core. This set back the civilization to the level of the USA in the mid-19th century, which created a wild west like environment, while also retaining some of the hi-tech stuff.

There is a limit to the amount of bots that can be spawned on a server, correct?

Futuristic Space Cowboys.

Thats my theme suggestion.

I believe that it is only physics vehicles which are limited. You can probably have as many bots as you like. And those limits can be passed with scripts anyway.

this is the best idea

not PRECISELY what i was thinking but damn well close

Hang gliding between islands sounds boss. There could be tunnels/alien ruins/etcetera carved into the undersides.

Something like this would be hella hard to build, but would be awesome to explore. Different islands could have different environments.

Not sure about how I feel with having them over a bottomless abyss though. I'd like to make the spawn point feel vulnerable, and have some sort of coast.

PLEASE go through with this!

Alright, so I've put some thought into this overnight.

I really like the shattered world idea. I'm thinking that the playable world could be divided into two parts: an upper continent, and a lower continent. The upper continent has been obliterated, and floats seamlessly above the lower continent; a much larger, stable landmass. The players spawn somewhere in the upper continent, in a largely destroyed city with the obligatory flaming barrels. The city and its underground portions are free to explore by horse and hang glider (refer to that picture above for a sense of what I'm getting at). The rest of the upper continent is largely uncharted, and consists of other floating ruins and smashed landforms.

The players adopt a Skyward Sword feel to the lower continent - it's hellhole where people go to die. Much more varied environments, oceans, and more bandits. Monsters, etc.

The occupants of both continents have made tools out of whatever materials that they had at hand, and again, have made use of horses and hang gliders rather than space ships and laser torcreepes.

I had an idea for premade content to build with, such as maybe tent and fire bricks. Fire could keep out land monsters or something - a good reason to hunker down for the night. idk. People have said that they wantd to build establishments and whatnot, so this sseems like it might keep creativity way down - a negative. This part still needs more thought. The underside of the lower continent could be one custommade brick - if that's possible.

It all sounds really ambitious. :P

Bricks have a maximum size of around a 64x cube. So you would have to have quite a lot of custom bottom bricks, but still possible and a good idea.

For the sake of practicality, if there is a lower level, then it may make more sense to just imply that its floating.

The general consensus is that the world should be divided into several smaller maps. This presents the interesting hurdle of how to connect a point on the ground to a point in the air. My main idea was some sort of sphere boundary system, where once a player gets to a certain point, they freeze or dramatically slow down, and are prompted to see whether or not they'd like to travel. If they chose not to, they would be teleported back to the nearest landmass, and if they chose to, they'd be teleported to whatever world they chose. This sounds like it would work, but once the player hits the lower level, I don't know how to get them back up without implementing a point to point fast travel system.

Also, I'd like to thank Doomonkey and Trey in particular for their feedback through the form. <3

Create a railroad/wagon/skyship transport system. Then just have hubs at every place that has been settled. The entirety of the lower world is discovered, so moving from there to a place in the upper world won't be a problem. But in the upper world you can only move to place that have been discovered, or walk across a threshold and move to only adjacent places.
