Okay two things.

1) When you start a new world, the entire screen is black except for the small rectangle. Its super annoying. If you are going to have it, at least make it so you aren't running at the start of the level. Maybe like a 3 2 1 Go thing.

2) Leaves on the bottom of the screen are way to big. They are distracting and sometimes hide stuff and then you die over and over again because you can't see.

Those two things have caused me to die and I kinda think that aint cool bro

the final version will have more like a "ready? go!" sort of thing at the beginning of every level. your character will have a little intro animation- something like tapping his foot on the ground, getting rid of dirt, stretching, that sort of thing

yeah i'm gonna add leaf-transparency at a later date. only when you drop below a certain height, though, so you can still see the game as intended as long as possible

(Also is the remixed sonic music just a place holder?)

well yeah what am i gonna do, SELL plagarized / remixed music?

gross

Thank you Bushido <3

Also needs more Steampunk levels cuz steampunk is cool and stuff

on another note i'm thinking of completely scrapping sunset surf and rebuilding it from scratch

the original idea was that it was supposed to be a water level 'done right', but then i realized that is an INCREDIBLY hard thing to pull off and i have no business operating that far out of my depth (ha) just yet. then i realized that that's actually a very easy thing to do (forget, sonic colors did it) and i was completely lying to myself, but had already gotten so far with the fan gimmick (which people seem to like- correct me if i'm wrong) that i didn't want to ditch the level designs that i already have made

the plan is that i'm gonna take certain parts of sunset coast (the REALLY forgetIN GOOD levels) ("the first 6 or 7 levels") and keep them intact but redo the tileset so the background-foreground contrast is less eye-burning and the entire thing is more interesting, and then come up with 4 new levels involving a new gimmick that could go on to be re-examined at a later point

thoughts?

I actually looked up Cattle Punk.

i'm going to need a bigger arrow.

i hate to state my opinion, but i feel like i have to.
i feel like it's gotten worse.
well, i like the new stage, but that's pretty much the only improvement i see.
for one, that vignette when you reach top speed gets pretty annoying. vignettes have usually gotten on my nerve because sometimes they're used when not necessary, or that they make me want to rub my eyes; i'm usually used to vignettes being a warning of something happening to me, but usually just pain. the speedy vortex effect gets annoying, not only that it comes on so suddenly, but that it alarms me too much. i'll be running around at the speed of sound when it suddenly comes on, then "ohgOD OH GOD WHAT'S HAPPENING-" oops spike ball
it happens too often. if it was at least more transparent it would be a bit better, but tbh, i just don't like it.
secondly, the graphics seem... meh. everything is scaled too oddly that it just looks bad. i know, it's so you can see more and have a better reaction to obstacles. but look at Generations:

look at how Sonic is pulled back instead of the camera being pulled back. this would be a better option than raising the resolution because the sprites would look fine, and the player would still have a good amount of time to react.

that's just my two cents on r0036.
again, i really hate having to be negative, but it's for the good of progression.

This.

also i'm going to put out my old idea for a health system but massively revised

so the player has two meters; a speed meter and a health meter. the way the system works is to reward speed (instead of punishing it like the old version).
let's say the speed and health meter both have 30 units. now, say i have 14 units on the speed meter; then, i get hit by an enemy projectile.
i would then lose 16 health points.
the way it works is that the number of speed points that's subtracted from the meter is the damage dealt.
30-14=16
thus, the faster you go, the less damage you will take. of course, this needs rubberbanding - at 30 speedwhatevers you'll take 1 damage just so you don't become invincible at full speed.
another rubberbanding part of the system is knockback. when you get hit by something, you will be slowed down a certain amount depending on your health and speed. every other empty health point subtracts 1 knockback force, and each speed point adds 1 knockback force.
eg. if im going 25 spd with 10 hp, then get hit, i'll be sent back with 15 knockback force.

i feel like i might be missing a few rubberbands, so correct me on anything.

... that's just stardust speedway
