Author Topic: My parents are skeptical about me hosting.  (Read 4342 times)

One time I portforwarded, and I was hacked by some guy in Germany. He downloaded all of my passwords on to his hacking device, stole all of my files, and replaced my desktop background with goatse. It is a highly risky process...
this mans words are  false

Port forwarding is no more dangerous than loading a website. All internet connections go through a socket which is bound to a port. The difference between connecting to a server and hosting a server is that you have to open up a spot on your computer for them to connect to. When this port has no socket bound to it, no connections will be able to go through. It is impossible to be hacked by forwarding ports for Blockland.

Furthermore, it is not required to host servers. UPnP support was added a while ago. Enable that on your router.

You're not really helping.
port forwarding doesn't make this any more or less likely.

I don't know how to say this without being rude, so I'm just going to be rude.  Your dad shovels coal for a living and I am a goddamn professional computer programmer.  I know more about this subject than your dad.  Port forwarding, if done correctly, is completely safe.

Actually, my stepdad is the president of a software company. He and my mom just have no idea how BL works.

Sorry, not telling.

Let's just say they make semi-popular software, including a website creator like Textwrangler or Notepad.

Oh come on, please tell me.

Tell them a low value target doesnt get major hackers.
Also Blockland is small, and has very little to none hackers.

Guys, Blockland itself is not hack able.
