I think my PC is stuff. Im probably getting a new CPU + Motherboard + New HDD for chrismas.

keep the hdd and you def need a new GPU and CPU

Your GPU is only one generation old. It's fine where it's at, 960 -> 1060 will hardly make any difference. Your CPU can make a big improvement though.

Same CPU socket. Shouldn't have any issues.
I just saw this post here :P. I haven't opened the case yet so I can still return my graphics card, how much of an improvement in performance will I see If I get this?

Isn't the 1060 usually a really good upgrade compared to a 960? Whenever I look up benchmarks and gaming comparisons, the 1060 always out performs the 960 by quite a bit

I'm not really all that savvy with computer parts, I only know the basics. That's why I was asking about If I should return my card, I don't know which would benefit me more :P.

I know the best one to go with would be the 1060 over a new CPU. Sure an i7 unlocked cpu would be good, but the current i5 he has is already very good (it's basically the locked version of the i5 4460k) and the 960 would still hold him back in performance. Especially when it comes to gaming which most of the time, depends a lot on the GPU.

I'd say go with a 1060 first, then when you can, get the i7. In my opinion, it'd be a better option that will get you more performance when it comes to gaming and such. If you like to render videos, record them, multitask like crazy, then go with the CPU. But if it is for gaming, then 1060.

Thank you c:, I'll be sure to keep my card.

Yeah but the 960 is a still a very recent card. If he isn't having any trouble with current games then there really just isn't a reason to upgrade that yet. On the other hand, the CPU is more out of date and will benefit a lot more from an upgrade. Take a look.

The GTX 960 scores 5870 on g3dmark, and the 1060 scores 8849. That's an improvement of 40.5%.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-4790K+%40+4.00GHz&id=2275

His current i5-4460 scores 6623 on cpumark, and the i7-4790k that I suggested scores 11188 on cpumark. That's an improvement of 51.3%. This also doesn't take into account the advantages of hyperthreading that you get from the i7 architecture.

My reasoning here is that if his goal were to upgrade the parts that would benefit the most from an upgrade to the latest hardware, the CPU would have a greater impact on total performance. If he is currently having trouble playing any games with his card then that's the thing to upgrade, but upgrading CPU is also necessary to prevent bottlenecking in future upgrades and presently holds more total improvement than the card does.

It will run, but not very well. Intels IGPs have always been sub-par for gaming, especially back then. If you're not going to play anything more demanding than TrackMania you can get by with a GTX 1050 for $110: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/G3H48d/zotac-geforce-gtx-1050-2gb-mini-video-card-zt-p10500a-10l
It'll easily run the game on max settings at way above 60 fps.
is the 1050 compatible with an i5 2310?

the gpu should be compatible with any CPU that has a motherboard with a PCIe connector

Your CPU should be perfectly fine

yay
now all I have to do is convince my mom to get me this delivered, unless its available in stores

Judging by this post, my gaming experience wouldn't be improving from a CPU upgrade? And another question, if I upgrade my GPU would I be bottlenecked?

Don't worry, unless if you have an extremely low par cpu, like under an i3, then it won't bottleneck your 1060. Plus unless if you constantly render videos, mulitask, record videos, and do all sorts of heavy CPU stuff on a constant basis, then your current i5 is perfectly fine.

Imho, going with a 1060 upgrade first, then an i7 upgrade would be more beneficial in gaming performance over an i7 first, then 1060.

Okay, thanks. c:
