is the corsair cx any good? i need a budget psu. the reviews are 4.5 stars on amazon, but tomshardware says they're stuff. anything must be better than my thermaltake tr2 (which according to the psu tier list, is bound to fail at any time).

what wattage do you need

i'd say 500 watts max. i have a gt 730 and maybe planning on getting a fx-6300. who knows.

i use this in my server thats been running 24/7 for a year if not close http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371033

its solid

if you need a little more than that, i use this one in my desktop which has a 970 and i5 6500, and is also on every day, but usually cycles like a normal computer http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438015

no problems with that one either

what are some upgrades i can do for under $200? my main concern is my psu, because i've heard how faulty they are.

current specs:

pentium dual-core e6700 3.2 ghz
3 gb ddr3-800 mhz ram
gt 730

the only games i care to run more smoothly are gmod and skyrim. cs:go and tf2 are good.

well first off id say you're only going to forget yourself up if you get a 6300

i had a 6350 and it was a piece of loving stuff

my dual core pentium did better, and i had that 6350 oc'd to 4.5

id suggest an i3 for an upgrade

but as far as under 200 dollars goes, just upgrade the psu for now, and save for later and maybe get a nice 1151 pentium or i3 and combine it with a 750 ti or 1050

also amd zen is right around the corner so keep that in mind

if that 500w is your current power supply then you have no reason to upgrade lol

its fine

just save up and get a 1151 board, and a pentium or i3 and pair it with a 750 ti or 1050

i have a stuffty thermaltake tr2 psu

i have a stuffty thermaltake tr2 psu

yeah then just upgrade the psu to one of the two that i listed or check some other budget reliable solutions and then save for the cpu and gpu combo

This is really urgent, apparently my mom is going out christmas shopping and never warned me beforehand. Can someone quickly tell me some good upgrades for my computer?

gtx 960 to a similarly priced (or somewhat higher) gtx 10-series gpu is all I see that could be upgraded that would change the performance a lot

everything else looks really good

Your GPU is only one generation old. It's fine where it's at, 960 -> 1060 will hardly make any difference. Your CPU can make a big improvement though.

Same CPU socket. Shouldn't have any issues.
